Time and Photography $48.22 Photography is fundamentally a time-based medium. The relationships between photography and time are manifold: snapshots are "slices of time," time can be directly represented within the image, time can be photography’s theme and philosophical horizon, photographic practices develop and change across time. This book brings together the various aspect of time in photography and of photography in time. Its chapters focus on seminal authors (including Fox Talbot, Victor Burgin, and Robert Morris) and genres (spirit photography, montage photobooks, and tableau photography), with examples ranging from the very first photographic pictures to the most recent uses of photography in and outside art.Given the multifaceted dimensions of the notion of time, the book fosters an interdisciplinary approach, gathering essays by historians of photography as well as by authors with a critical or philosophical background. It shows how some interpretations of photography are indebted to fields that have a great expertise in analyzing time, such as narratology and literature. Written by international specialists for a nonspecialist audience and displaying extraordinary breadth and erudition, this book reshapes our vision of photography, time, culture, and art. |

Photography $33.95 PHOTOGRAPH PLATE i Frontispiece Coating a gelatin dry plate by hand. PHOTOGRAPHY By C. E. KENNETH MEES D. Sc DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT EASTMAN KODAK. COMPANY ROCHESTER, NEW YORK SECOND EDITION, REVISED NEW YORK THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 1951 Preface to Second Edition THE rapid progress in photography since the first edition of this book was published has made neces sary a revision of some of the chapters. The discovery of the structure of the developed silver image re vealed by the electron microscope has changed and clarified our views as to the process of development. At the same time, the theory of the formation of the latent image has become much more definite. The development of the tripack processes has revolutionized the practice of color photography, which is now in the full tide of an unparalleled ex pansion. Chapters IV, VI, and VIII have accordingly been revised to cover the changes in photographic theory and practice. Rochester, N. Y. December i, 1941 Preface PHOTOGRAPHY is both an art and a science it is an invaluable tool to those working in the other arts and sciences, and there are few activities of civilized man in which it has no part. There are many books on the art of photography, some of which are intended for beginners or for those to whom photography is only an amusement, while others deal in a comprehensive manner with photo graphic technique and its applications. This book, which had its origin in a course of lectures given last Christmas at the Royal Institution in London, is intended to provide a general review of the whole subject of photography written in a simple and popu lar style. The Christmas lectures have been given for more than a century andare intended especially for young people. By custom, the lectures consist largely of experiments and demonstrations, which have neces sarily been replaced in the book by description and illustrations. Photographic science is derived both from physics and from chemistry The preparation of the photo graphic material and its treatment after exposure may Vlll PREFACE be regarded as a branch of applied chemistry the exposure and the relation of that exposure to the photographic image involves the principles of physical optics. But photography has become differentiated from its parent sciences, and there has been developed a science of photography with a literature, a terminol ogy, and an instrumental technique of its own. From the laboratories which are engaged in the study of photographic science will come the future develop ments in the practical art of photography. It has been my fortune to be associated rather closely with the historical development of the subject. In 1901, while a student at the university, my atten tion was directed to the work of Hurter and Driffield, the photographic amateurs whose investigations laid the foundation for all subsequent work on photo graphic sensitometry and from that time, I have been engaged in the study of the science of pho togr |

Photography Unplugged $21.76 Harald Mante is regarded as one of the outstanding contemporary photographers in Germany. He started out as a travel photographer whose work was published in numerous magazines and books and later taught photography in the tradition of the Bauhaus school of design, applying image and color composition concepts to photography. This book is meant to present the wealth of Mante’s photographic work and at the same time to advocate a pure, straight approach to photography, untouched by digital image editing tools — uncropped and unmodified captures of scenes as seen through the viewfinder. Photography Unplugged is meant to sound a voice which is singing to a slightly different tune than the digital photography choir. Harald Mante’s photographs, all captured on Kodachrome’s legendary slide films, will inspire beginners and expert photographers alike, and will reveal the beauty and magic of masterfully composed photography. |

After Photography $7.17 After Photography examines the myriad ways in which the digital revolution has fundamentally altered the way we receive visual information, from photos of news events taken by ordinary people on cell phones to the widespread use of image surveillance. In a world beset by critical problems and ambiguous boundaries, Fred Ritchin argues that it is time to begin energetically exploring the possibilities created by digital innovations and to use them to better understand our rapidly changing world. Ritchin-one of our most influential commentators on photography-investigates the future of visual media as the digital revolution transforms images into a hypertextual medium, fundamentally changing the way we conceptualize the world. Simultaneously, the increased manipulation of photographs makes photography suspect as reliable documentation, raising questions about its role in recounting personal and public histories. In the tradition of John Berger and Susan Sontag, Ritchin analyzes photography’s failings and reveals untapped potentials for the medium. |

The Life and Death of Buildings: On Photography and Time $28.93 Buildings inhabit and symbolize time, giving form to history and making public space an index of the past. Photographs are made of time; they are literally projections of past states of their subjects. This visually striking meditation on architecture in photography, indirectly marking the tenth anniversary of 9/11, explores the intersection between these two ways of embodying the past, by contemplating photographs of buildings as simultaneously the agents, vehicles, and cargo of social memory. "The Life and Death of Buildings" features images by such renowned photographers as Edouard-Denis Baldus, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Laura Gilpin, Lewis W. Hine, and William Henry Fox Talbot alongside those by amateurs, architects, propagandists, and even insurance adjusters. Rather than examine these photographers’ aims in isolation, the author considers how their images reflect and inflect the passage of time. Much as a building’s shifting function and circumstances substantially alter its significance, a photograph studied in the context of its subsequent history grows layers of meaning to which its maker had no access. |

American Photography $20.87 150 years of American photography come alive in this exciting new book, placing it in its cultural context for the first time. Orvell examines this fascinating subject through a wide range of well known and less-well known images. He ranges from portraiture and landscape photography, family albums and memory, and analyses the particularly ‘American’ way in which American photographers have viewed the world around them. Orvell combines a clear overview of the changing nature of photographic thinking and practice in this period with an exploration of key concepts. The result is the first coherent history of American photography, which examines issues such as the nature of photographic exploitation, experimental techniques, the power of the photograph to shock, and whether we should subscribe to the notion of a visual history. |
