Opening the picture?

My son was born almost 4 months and I'm trying to find a way to take some good pictures of him. I've been reading opening on the prioritization of digital cameras and liked the idea that the focal point of my picutre in focus blur, but everything else. I I have my camera in "aperture priority shooting" fit and have the whole aperture as f2.8 (ISO 400-1.7ev) and backgrounds of my paintings are appearing normal! My camera is a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX1. Anyone have any advice for me?

unfortunately, because the point and shoot has a tiny sensor focal length is not long enough to give a depth of field. the opening is not only affecting DOF there is also the focal length (basically optical zoom) and subject distance. try to close as you can about the optical zoom and standing as close to it. sit away from the bottom as possible. this should give you the effect you want. Remember to concentrate on composition and technical aspects of it. look for the rule of thirds, which should improve their photos too. Hope this helps and good luck.
