Photography Zines

How do I get into the band/live music photography business?
My college newspaper is pretty crappy, so it’s not even worth going to them to see if they need any shots of anything. Not to mention the music scene here blows, so…there you go. Anyway, I wanted to know if there were any zines out there that were looking for contributors or photographers that I could shoot for. No, I’m not looking to just get into shows for free or meet bands or anything–I legitimately want to shoot band photography because it’s something that I really enjoy doing.
Any ideas/help? Everything is appreciated! Thanks.
The best way to get the tear-sheets you need so you can approach local bands and newspapers, is to work for your schools newspaper.
Your quality images will enhance the paper and since the images you get of the bands do not include the music which you say blows, it won’t matter …. after all you are there to get mind blowing images and prove to the promoters and venues that you are one heck of a photographer and can produce mind blowing photos under any conditions.

Papercut Heart: A Book of Zines $14.74 Ian Sullivan Cants zines / illustrated poems are collected here into his first book, Papercut Heart. In deceptively simple pages, he tackles love, death and dreams with a wistful existentialism. Chia pets frolic with narwhals under banners that flutter with secret hope, Frankensteins creation speculates on the nature of self, and a story written entirely in Morse Code weaves through silent statuary. Cants writing confronts the tragic disparity between fantasy and ideal, and the disappointment of reality, but always seeks to touch the reader with melancholy. His obsession with Bhorror movies allows him to find the beauty in trash culture, either in the form of a hidden and subversive genius, or the tenderness and vulnerability of unskilled creative passion. Cants instruction in zen poetry is evident in his clean, delicate linework which belies the depth of his sentiments. Ruminations on the temporal nature of all things are thrown into stark relief by the accompanying drawing, be it a cupcake, a matchbook, or the image of a lost love, and many, many, talking ravens. |

Notes from Underground: Zines and the Politics of Alternative Culture $12.32 Much history and theory about the world of zines is uncovered in this first comprehensive study of zine publishing. From their origins in early 20th century science fiction cults, to their more proximate roots in 60s counter-culture, and their rapid proliferation in the wake of punk rock. Paying full due to the political importance of zines as a vital network of popular culture, Stephen Duncombe acknowledges the shortcomings of zines’ utopian and escapist outlook in achieving fundamental social change. Packed with extracts and illustrations, "Notes From Underground" provides a useful overview of the contemporary underground in all its splendor and misery. |

Girl Zines: Making Media, Doing Feminism $29.34 With names like "The East Village Inky," "Mend My Dress," "Dear Stepdad," and "Iam So Fucking Beautiful," zines created by girls and women over the past two decades make feminism’s third wave visible. These messy, photocopied do-it-yourself documents cover every imaginable subject matter and are loaded with handwriting, collage art, stickers, and glitter. Though they all reflect the personal style of the creators, they are also sites for constructing narratives, identities, and communities. Girl Zines is the first book-length exploration of this exciting movement. Alison Piepmeier argues that these quirky, personalized booklets are tangible examples of the ways that girls and women ‘do’ feminism today. The idiosyncratic, surprising, and savvy arguments and issues showcased in the forty-six images reproduced in the book provide a complex window into feminism’s future, where zinesters persistently and stubbornly carve out new spaces for what it means to be a revolutionary and a girl. Girl Zines takes zines seriously, asking what they can tell us about the inner lives of girls and women over the last twenty years. |
