Photography World War 1
London Underground Photography ???

Hello, I’m just starting up a London Underground Photography website. The main theme is ‘Barriers’, so anything like signs, gates, stoppers, buffers, anything that stops something or someone or anything or restricts it. Has anyone got any good UNDERGROUND stations with interesting features or old world war 1/2 things and tiles. Please submit the station name and what it is, thanks!

First of all, you cannot (legally) take photographs on the London Underground without prior consent. (But that does not prevent the odd shot being taken!) DO NOT use flash in a station underground – there are safety issues involved.

But, you do not need to be beneath ground to get some good shots. Indeed, most of the so-called quaintness will be found on the above-ground extremities of the system, away from the bustle and jobsworth of Central London.

For example, the stations on the Cockfosters branch of the Piccadilly Line are worth photographing in their own right. One of the easiest stations to get a photograph of buffers is Stanmore. Some of the station exits on the West Ruislip end of the Central Line are interesting. And for rustic charm, is there anything to beat Mill Hill East?

There are Yahoo Groups and Flickr Groups devoted to the photography to which you allude.

The War: A Ken Burns Film

The War: A Ken Burns Film

$7.98

The soundtrack for The War, documentarian Ken Burns’s 2007 PBS series on World War II, alternates between earlier, wartime, and postwar material, all designed to complement the narrative. The material was clearly selected to evoke the mood of the era: Benny Goodman’s sextet tears off a hot 1942 “Wang Wang Blues,” and Count Basie lets fly with “Basie Boogie” (1941) and the prewar “How Long Blues.”…

Photography and Japan

Photography and Japan

$32.81

In "Photography and Japan," Karen Fraser argues that the diversity of styles, subjects, and functions of Japanese photography precludes easy categorization along nationalized lines. Instead, she shows that the development of photography within Japan is best understood by examining its close relationship with the country’s dramatic cultural, political, and social history.   "Photography and Japan" covers 150 years of photography, a period in which Japan has experienced some of the most significant events in modern history and made a remarkable transformation from an isolated, feudal country into an industrialized, modern world power—a transformation that included a striking rise and fall as an imperial power during the first half of the twentieth century and a miraculous economic recovery in the decades following the devastation of World War II. The history of photography has paralleled these events, becoming inextricably linked with notions of modernity and cultural change.   Through thematic chapters that focus on photography’s role in negotiating cultural identity, war, and the documentation of urban life, "Photography and Japan" introduces many images that will be unfamiliar to Western viewers and provides a broadened context for those photos that are better known.

Photography and Flight

Photography and Flight

$29.94

Used for everything from geographic evaluation to secret spy missions, aerial photography has a rich and storied history, ably recounted here in "Photography and Flight." Aerial photography is marked by its dependency on technological developments in both photography and aerospace, and the authors chart the history of this photography as it tracked the evolution of these technologies. Beginning with early images taken from hot-air balloons, fixed platforms, and subsequent handheld camera technology, Denis Cosgrove and William Fox then explain how military reconnaissance and governmental projects were instrumental in catalyzing these and other innovations in the field. They examine pivotal historical moments in which aerial photography began to establish itself as essential tool, such as in World War II military strategies, high-altitude photography taken from postwar rockets and aircraft, and the use of aerial photography during the cold war and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The book also explores the advancement of geographic scholarship through aerial photography, ranging from military excursions into Antarctica to the images of the curvature of the earth taken during the Apollo space missions. While digital technology and remote sensing have changed the landscape of photography, "Photography and Flight" argues that they have not diminished the significance of aerial photography in providing images of the earth. Rather, new technologies and resulting innovations such as Google Earth have enabled the mass democratization of access to such information. "Photography and Flight" ultimately reveals how the camera lens from far away continues to unearth telling details about the land and those who live upon it.

Italian Aces of World War 1

Italian Aces of World War 1

$21.43

The Italian aces of World War 1 have gone down in history as the irrefutable masters of the skies in the battle against their Austro-Hungarian enemies. In this often forgotten theater of warfare these remarkable pilots gave the Italian forces an undisputed air superiority and left an enduring legacy as extraordinary men. Having interviewed the descendants of almost every Italian ace from the Great War, Paolo Varriale uncovers these fighters’ incredible and sometimes tragic histories. Years of painstaking research has culminated in this truly groundbreaking study which brings to life the exploits of such famous aces as Baracca, Ruffo and Piccio, and the lesser known Riva, Sabelli and Nardini. Letters, diaries and unpublished photographs shed light on previously unknown personal and unit insignia, exposing many myths and making this a commanding addition to the aviation history of World War 1.

Albatros Aces of World War 1

Albatros Aces of World War 1

$20.73

The Albatros family of fighters were amongst the most effective aircraft employed by the Idlfieg (Imperial German Air Service) for much of World War 1, with the D.III and D.Va being flown by most of the 363 pilots who qualified as aces at some point in their often brief careers. The Albatros was the scourge of the RFC on the Western Front in 1916-17, with pilots of the calibre of von Richthofen, Boelke and Schleich cutting swathes through their opponents. Well over 4000 Albatros scouts were built between 1916 and 1918, and they were also extensively used by the Austro-Hungarians against Russian, Italian and British aircraft until war’s end.

The golden age of animation stretched from the early 1930s to the mid1950s, with movie cartoons reaching an extraordinarily high level of artistry and technique far higher than todays TV cartoons, for instance. Nearly 1,000 cartoons were produced by the seven major animation studiosin the U.S. between January 1, 1939, and September 30, 1945 the immediate pre World War II period up to the cessation of hostilities. More than a quarter of the cartoons substantially refer to the war, and thereby are invaluable in helping to understand American attitudes and Hollywoods reflection of them.

 Recording Britain

Recording Britain

$51

Recording Britain was an artistic documentary project sponsored by the British government in the late 1930s as the country faced the potentially devastating impact of a second world war. The resulting collection of more than 1,500 watercolors and drawings, by both well-known and amateur artists, is a rich visual record of buildings, landscapes, and livelihoods perceived to be under threat. “Recording Britain “brings together highlights from this extraordinary collection at the V&A, vivid images of national and regional identity that often portray an idealized account of the country for which its audience, at the time, was fighting. The pictures are discussed in relation to contemporary British artists and photographers such as John Virtue, Conrad Atkinson, Richard Long, and Laura Oldfield Ford, whose work also reflects on a sense of place.
