how do i take a picture with bokeh in the BACKGROUND only?
hello!
i just figured out how to take pictures of bokeh but how do i take a bokeh picture with something in focus and the background as bokeh?? I’m using a canon rebel xti with the original lens that came with it (sorry i’m not good with photography terms…)
for example:
i can take basic bokeh shots like this:
with everything out of focus.
I would eventually like to take pictures with bokeh just in the background like this:

Is what you are calling bokeh in your shots, just changing to manual focus and taking out of focus pictures? If so, I understand your dilemma on getting part of the picture in focus, part blurry.
Using the largest aperture you have to get good bokeh. In your case, when you are shooting at 18mm, your largest aperture (smallest F-stop number) is 3.5 (assuming you have the kit lens). At 55mm, your largest aperture is 5.6 I think. These are not great apertures to get a good blur, but it’s the best you can do. Set your camera on aperture priority (Av) in order to set the aperture you want to use.
You may want to conside the Canon 50mm lens at some time – it is around $100 and it has a much larger aperture than the kit lens.
