Photography Programs

How is the photography program at FIT in Manhattan?
I’m interested in transfering to the photography program at FIT in Manhattan – was wondering if anyone here is an alumni or is currently attending. Are the programs good there, how are the professors, students, facilities, atmosphere? If anyone has transfered there, was the transfer process difficult, How is the administration there? How career oriented are they? How are the internships there? and what kind of things were done on these jobs? Have you found yourself and classmates did well with finding good jobs after graduating?
I would like to enroll into the BA program, but do you think the associates would be enough?
I know it’s alot of questions, – I checked the FIT website already but, it would be great to hear from those who’ve experienced it. I would appreciate any info and/or advice so I could make an informed decision. Thanks!

One poster said that many photographers end up transferring OUT of FIT because it’s so fashion-centric. Which is great if that’s the industry you want to be in, but if you’re looking for more rounded photo curriculum, it may not be for you. The bright side is that it’s a state school and half the cost. Good luck.

Portrait Photography Transformed: 1960 Present $167.28 Photography at the high school level has traditionally been taught in a studio or darkroom and rarely included art history. The curriculum was generally gender biased and narrowly focused, leaving little time to investigate important contributions of female photographers. Because of the digital revolution, photography has moved from the darkroom into the computer lab where students learn technical skills and basic software programs. Because computer lab exercises lack any broad intellectual significance, combining photography with computer technology in a classroom setting makes it possible for students to learn about one and become proficient at the other. Also, there has been little significant political, cultural, and social discourse in the classroom within a mainstream educational context. Portrait Photography Transformed: 1960 Present focuses on how changing times affect social concepts of art, communication, and technology. The study of portraiture offers a point of connection between contemporary modes of production and the timelessness of being human. Through portrait photography, students find mirrors reflecting who they were, are, or could be. Author: Maphet, Barbara Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 284 Publication Date: 2011/01/03 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.64 inches |

On Photography $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles On Photography is a 1977 collection of essays by Susan Sontag. It originally appeared as a series of essays in the New York Review of Books between 1973 and 1977. In the book, Sontag expresses her views on the history and presentday role of photography in capitalist societies as of the 1970s. Sontag discusses many examples of modern photography. Among these, she contrasts Diane Arbuss work with that of Depressionera documentary photography commissioned by the Farm Security Administration. She also explores the history of American photography in relation to the idealistic notions of America put forth by Walt Whitman and traces these ideas through to the increasingly cynical aesthetic notions of the 1970s, particularly in relation to Arbus and Andy Warhol. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 104 Publication Date: 2010/12/29 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.25 inches |

A Divided World: Hollywood Cinema and Emigre Directors in the Era of Roosevelt and Hitler, 1933-1948 $40 The New Deal introduced sweeping social, political, and cultural change across the United States, which Hollywood embraced enthusiastically. Then, when the heady idealism of the 1930s was replaced by the paranoia of the postwar years, Hollywood became an easy target for the anticommunists. “A Divided World “examines some of the important programs of the New Deal and the subsequent response of the film community–especially in relation to social welfare, women’s rights, and international affairs. The book also provides an analysis of the major works of three European directors–Billy Wilder, Ernst Lubitsch, and Fritz Lang–compared and contrasted with the products of mainstream Hollywood. This is a new interpretation of an influential period in American film history and it is sure to generate further debate and scholarship. |
