Photography Lighting Kits For Beginners
Beginner Photographer, needs help with studio lighting.?
Ok. I’m not really a beginner. I took a few class way back in the day and for some reason I can’t remember anything (35mm days). I’m doing portrait photography. I love texture and sharp lines and abstract photography. So, I’m not worried about composition as I know I have that down.
My question is, I need a good home studio. I have backdrops and a stand from when I took the classes a while back. I used to have a light set but I can’t remember what the brand was or even the watts. I need a good studio lighting kit that has everything. Ebay sellers don’t even offer good specifications on their bands and I can’t see spending a ton of money for something that can’t be used for what I need. I’ve been searching the web but there are so many options that I can’t seem to understand what would be best. Links would help too or if you can spell out what all the numbers mean in the specifications.

for portraits your basic needs can be met with 3 lights
1. main light
2. fill light
3. hair light
some photogs will also use additional lights for lighting the background, lighting the back of the subject to create a more defined outline, lighitng a full length subject, etc.
adorama.com has prices that are hard to beat. a basic 3 hot light kit with umbrellas and stands can be had for under $200 and better or more advanced kits are of course available if your budget is there.
