Photography Classes Nyc
how hard is it to get into FIT in nyc?

i want to go for photography. people tell me i have a lot of talent and my dad is a photographer so he’s helping me out a lot and will continue to teach me.

i have okay grades (about a b average) i do very well in photo though.

i am from long island, have a jewish last name, and are middle class (things that all work against me apparently?)

but! i just found out that my great aunt was in the first graduating class there and was called back recently to restore colonial dresses and such. would it help if she wrote me a recommendation?

anyway, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the hardest) how hard is it to get into FIT? do i have a chance?

It’s not as difficult as many people think to get into the Fashion Institute. People keep forgetting that it’s in the City University of New York system (CUNY) and they have a lot of non-traditional students attending. I’ve never actually applied, but two very close friends of mine attended for their undergraduates – one’s graduated, the other is finishing her last year now. Both had average grades in high school – one with a 2.9 overall, the other with a 3.2. Um, as for your Jewish last name …. I’m pretty sure that, according to New York State law, it CAN’T work against you – Jewish, and moreso females, are considered minorities in any case, so I don’t know who told you that. Lots of people in New York have Jewish last names – some who aren’t even Jewish. Your middle class income may prevent you from receiving state and federal aid, and from being considered for EOP (Equal Opportunity Program) but it’s not going to affect your admissions. I only worked in the financial aid office of my CUNY school for three years, though, so I may know nothing ….

As for your aunt’s recommendation, that’s a great idea. Be sure to tell her to mention her involvement with the school and the fact that there seems to be some serious creativity and devotion to the fine arts that clearly runs in your family’s lineage.

Finally, on a scale of 1-10, I would go with a 5. You should be on your way to FIT if you keep your grades up, score well on the SATs (which I don’t think are actually required for admission, but if you do well on them, they may help boost your enrollment potential) and follow up with rec letters.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles On Photography is a 1977 collection of essays by Susan Sontag. It originally appeared as a series of essays in the New York Review of Books between 1973 and 1977. In the book, Sontag expresses her views on the history and presentday role of photography in capitalist societies as of the 1970s. Sontag discusses many examples of modern photography. Among these, she contrasts Diane Arbuss work with that of Depressionera documentary photography commissioned by the Farm Security Administration. She also explores the history of American photography in relation to the idealistic notions of America put forth by Walt Whitman and traces these ideas through to the increasingly cynical aesthetic notions of the 1970s, particularly in relation to Arbus and Andy Warhol.
