Photography Classes Boston
Are you often required to speak before the class in college?

Since I have a small (hugehugehugehuge) fear of public speaking I was wondering how many times you were asked/required to speak in front of the class during college? Mainly your core classes (math, english, etc.) as I am looking to go to a community college to get my core credits out of the way before I move out to Boston to study Photography. Thanks!
P.S.- I didn’t ask to be criticized about my fear of public speaking. If you feel like coaxing somebody out of their shell become a fucking prostitute.

It really depends on the class and the professor.
I appreciate your fear of public speaking, early in my career, I worked in sales and trying not to shake my way through presentations every day was keeping me from earning commissions. It’s your choice, you can choose to keep your handicap, or you can choose to get help.
After a while, I decided that I had to do something to overcome this handicap, so I started volunteering at a place that required me to occasionally give tours. But it was giving tours showing something about which I was really passionate and the audience really wanted to hear the information.
It took a couple of years, but the anxiety finally relaxed. So long as I am comfortable with the material, I can talk to groups now with no problem. Practice and experience finally overcame the fear.
This is one solution. Another would be to talk to a therapist or counselor and work from there. If you choose to keep your fear, then you will spend energy and time trying to circumvent opportunities to showcase your art and your abilities. Here are some strategies you can try.

–Wear neutral colored and non-patterned clothes. (I didn’t want to be the focus of their attention.)
–Go to the bathroom before the talk so you don’t have to worry about a full bladder mid-way through.
–Carry a tissue in a pocket, just in case.
–Know the material well enough that you can tell it, not read it, (an index card with 3-4 notes for special information, like dates is okay.)
–If you make a mistake, quietly say so, correct yourself and move on. (It’s only when you make a production of forgetting your place or mis-speaking that they remember the error.)
–If you completely have a brain freeze, say to your audience, let’s take a moment to look at the (whatever,) turn, and describe what you see–whether it is an animal, a plant, a work of art or one of your photographs. By then, you should remember your place in the talk.
–If people have a quizzical look on their faces, you can ask for questions.
–Most importantly, the audience wants to hear what you have to say and they want you to succeed. No one there wants to cause you harm, and you are safe.

At some point, with talent and some luck, your photographs could be come famous, and people will want to know your thoughts about your work. If you are able to talk about it in public–at exhibitions, panel discussions, seminars and presentations, you will only enhance your reputation as an artist. It’s something to shoot for. Good-luck.
