How can I enhance my photos so they look more professional.?

Okay, I’m a beginner at photography and I’ve taken some fairly good pictures. The thing is I see all those professional photographers have played with their pictures online or on software to make them seem a little more unreal. I especially want to apply the effect to one of my pictures where I can make some of the background black and white or gray and then have the color of my main focus in the picture pop. Does anyone know of a quick and easy way I can do this? Is there free software I can download? Are there any other techniques I can use?
