Photography Night Shooting help?

I have a Canon Powershot A590 and I need to know how I can shoot the moon at night and get the clouds in the photo too. Every time I shot the moon and clouds, the photo comes out to be very dark and only the moon shows up.

the a590 is a point and shoot which (probably) is averaging out the exposure for the scene and not capable of too much “tweaking”.

The problem you have is that the moon is the brightest thing in the sky at the time and the camera will average out the scene based on that – so – you will get a bright moon and dark everything else.

One way around this is to try a long exposure – put the camera on a tripod and if you can set it so that the exposure is 1 or more seconds (you will have to experiment), this will give more exposure to the clouds but will also tend to burn out the brighter areas (the moon).

Or
put the camera on a tripod and take multiple exposures and combine them in an editing programme.
I believe the camera can “spot meter”. So, take one exposure with the moon metered.
A second exposure with the clouds metered
then combine the two in photoshop (or whatever)

or
take just a single shot at the cameras metered exposure and attempt to “burn in” the clouds in an editing programme.

Any photography at night is a case of experimenting until you know more about exposure etc.

Most cameras when set on “auto” and specifically p&s cameras will average out a scene to any Bright spots will get more exposure at the expense of shadow detail.
