Photography Assignments For Beginners
Shooting good concert photography?

For a photography class of mine we have an assignment in which we are to go to a concert and take photos covering it. I’m using my DSLR and shooting manually, but as a beginner, I’m not entirely sure what settings would provide for the best photos. We’re also advised not to use flash so that is to be taken in to consideration. Can anyone with a good deal of experience in this area give some advice? It would be much appreciated! Thank you so much!

I don’t have a great deal of experience shooting concerts but I do know that the lighting can be horrible since it changes every second. I went to a Boney James concert for my job and this is the best shot I got:

Boney James

Here is the EXIF data:
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 93 mm
ISO Speed: 1600
Exposure Bias: 0/2 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

I was using a Canon Rebel XT with a 70-200 sigma lens. I agree that you will benefit from using a long lens!

I got the shot after a lot of tries. Just start off with whatever aperture you want (in my case I wanted a shallow DoF) and play with shutter speed while keeping your metering in mind. Take lots of shots because you will end up with the same shot in 20 different lightings. Also, play with your ISO. I started to get descent shots after turning the ISO to 1600. Good luck and have fun!
