Photography Aperture Shutter Speed

Photography Aperture Shutter Speed
What settings [aperture, exposure, shutter speed, and ISO] do you recommend for indoor concert photography?

I use the SonyAlpha A100 with a 18–70mm f/3.5–5.6 wide-angle kit lens.

This will be tricky. Your lens is not fast enough to set a usable shutter speed to hand hold your shots in that kind of light. In low light with your maximum aperture [f/3.5 at 18mm but will stop down to 5.6 as you increase your focal length], without a flash, even with your ISO set to 1600 will still only yield you a shutter speed of 1/12 of a second [I checked on my camera, in aperture priority with my ISO set to 1600]. You can’t shoot that by hand and get sharp images [any speed slower than 1/40 is very hard to shoot by hand], they will be blurry due to the slow shutter speed. Your internal flash is useless beyond 8 to 10 feet. If you have an external flash, it’ll let you shoot at 1/60-1/125. You might have up to 2 or 3 stops faster if your camera has a higher ISO than 1600, and 2 or 3 stops more with your cameras image stabilizer. So, at best, you’re looking at 1/25 of a second. Your image stabilizer may be able to work down to that shutter speed. I shoot with a nikon and I have a telezoom lens with VR and I have managed shots down to 1/25, with a very steady hand. I’m sorry to say, but a kit lens is very limiting, especially indoors. If you can, I would suggest you buy a good fast aperture lens, f/2.8 or lower.

Try the highest ISO your camera is capable of and shoot in aperture priority at f/3.5. Turn your image stabilizer on and if it’s any good, it’ll compensate for camera shake. Don’t even bother with your internal flash, like I mentioned before, it will not work beyond 10 feet.
