Night Time Photography Film
As a beginner to photography, what is a good camera to start with- especially for night shots?

I’m just starting photography. I haven’t taken any courses but my major is filmmaking and I am planning on dabbling with photography. Well, I want to take crisp, clear pictures but I bet the cost for film is kind of expensive. Plus I am inexperienced as to the types of films to use and how to use them effectively. In that regard, I assume digital would be better. I don’t want a crappy digital camera that has alot of noise distortion. I want something that can handle night time shots or low-key lighting (something with alot of contrasts i think). I don’t have much money being a student. I might be able to scrounge up 300-400 dollars though. Hopefully I’ll be able to add a telephoto lens to it- but i don’t know anything about buying those either…

Your budget is really tight for a camera to do what you want and / or will not just soon become a frustration. Film is really not that expensive, and you can get some very nice 35mm SLR cameras at very low prices, especially used. As for digital, it will be almost impossible to touch a DSLR at your price point, especially with a lens. The Nikon D40 kit would be your best bet. It will do all you want at a cost of $480.

For comparison, here is a great 35mm film setup for $120. It is NOT that expensive to get processing done on C41 35mm film.

Fujifilm FinePix SL300 Digital Camera

$289.95

Features: The widely renown Fujinon Lenses are used popularly in numerous situations including satellites in outer space, TV/film, surveillance, and compact cameras. With the highly adept manufacture of Fujifilm, high precision optic and technology are provided for the best 24mm wide angle and 30x optical zoom. The lens elements used in the FinePix SL300 have been treated with multilayer Super EBC (Electron Beam Coating), the same process used for Fujinon broadcasting video lenses and large-format camera lenses acclaimed by professionals. Reducing ghosting and lens flare, the treatment promises clear image quality. The powered 30x zoom*1 features smooth 45-step*1 zoom control, giving you the ability to frame every shot with precision accuracy. At a distance of just 2cm, macro photography using the FinePix SL300 allows you to capture all the exquisite detail of your subject from really close up. Dual Image Stabilization is the combination of high sensitivity and CCD shift image stabilization that works to eliminate blurred photos by freezing action and minimizing blurs at maximum zoom range. The FinePix SL300 offers the flexibility of framing your shots through the crisp, clear electronic viewfinder. In addition to enhanced visibility in bright daylight, the bright EVF accommodates a traditional shooting style, making it easy to steady the camera, even when shooting with the 30x zoom fully extended. A diopter adjustment permits fine-tuning of the magnification power. With its ultra-wide view angle of 160 degrees, the bright, high-contrast (1:1100), 3.0-inch, 460,000-dot LCD screen makes composing, viewing, and sharing images a pleasure. The hard-working Li-ion battery is capable of capturing up to 300 frames on a single charge. A hot-shoe accommodates an auxiliary TTL flash, for shooting scenes beyond the capability of the built-in flash. A selection of versatile compatible flash units is available from your FinePix dealer. Turn the power ON from a cold start and FinePix SL300 is ready to shoot in only 1.8 sec. Framed scenes are automatically detected and selected into appropriate camera settings: Portrait, Landscape, Night, Macro, Night Portrait, and Backlit Portrait. Face Detection optimizes people pictures by detecting faces and adjusting focus and exposure to ensure bright, clear results. The camera will warn you when people in the frame are blinking, giving you the option to retake the photo, or enlarge the face so you can save or delete the image before you take the next shot. The Smile & Shoot mode of Scene Position, automatically releases the shutter when the smile appears so you won’t miss the adorable smile the moment they happen. The FinePix SL300 not only detects faces in a frame but it can also recognize who is who! You can register up to 8 people in your camera and next time you take a photo of them it will bring up their name and optimize settings in favor of your registered faces. In playback, you can search for all photos containing registered faces to quickly find photos of your favorites. Lets you take panorama photos as simply as 1, 2, 3! The camera automatically stitches together three consecutive shots, with simple in-frame guidance to ensure the images are aligned. The resulting image is saved to the memory card as an impressive panorama. Can’t decide whether it’s best to use flash? Choose this mode, press the shutter and automatically capture the same scene twice: once with high sensitivity and natural light, and the second time with Intelligent Flash. Later choose one or keep both! Keeps fast moving subjects in the frame and in focus, even when the zoom is fully extended. Great for capturing dynamic close-ups. A function to follow moving subjects in standard wide view for easy framing at high zoom settings. With a single press of a button, the subject tracked within the selected frame on the LCD, will be captured and saved at a high zoom ra
