how can i improve my nighttime photography?
how can i improve my night time photography?
i know all the principles to it but what shutter and iso would be appropiate if say…there were some lights
most of my night time come out as if it looks day time
p.s.
i use manual exposure
i shoot with a d40
well i was using iso 1600
so thats probably why
and ill try out what you said
and im using 18-55 nikkor lens

I see no reason to fumble around with trying different f-stops and shutter speeds and changing the ISO trying to get that really good exposure. Besides, if you change more than one variable (ISO/shutter speed/f-stop) at a time it gets real confusing real quick.
The Louisville, Kentucky skyline as seen from the Indiana shore across the Ohio River is one of my favorite subjects. At the referenced site I chose “Distant city skyline” from the list of Scenes, decided on ISO 200 and then clicked “Calculate”. From the list of f-stop/shutter speed combinations I chose f11 @ 30 seconds. You be the judge of how well they turned out:
Pictures made using a vintage Minolta XE-7 35mm film camera. “Louisville” and “Kennedy Bridge” made using a 100mm prime lens. “Galt House Hotels” made using a 200mm prime lens. Camera tripod-mounted. I timed my exposures by counting 1001, 1002, 1003, etc.
Of course if you find your results too bright or otherwise unsuitable you can always vary the exposure time. Suppose you decide to try the same settings I used but think it just looks too bright. Try another one at f11 @ 25 sec. or even 20 sec. Unless you’re into confusion, never change more than one variable at a time.
