Is Photography Art Essay
question about college admission essay? HELP please..?

i am applying for pharmacy as a major, and my prompt is:

Rutgers University is a vibrant community of people with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. How would you benefit from and contribute to such an environment? Consider variables such as your talents, travels, leadership activities, volunteer services, and cultural experiences.

….does my experiences and talents have no relation to my major, is that bad? because I love art, photography and everything about art…yet I want to do pharmacy, which has like no connection to my hobbies and such.

do the things i say about myself in my essay have to be related to the major i’m considering?

thanks so much for all those who help!! :) i really appreciate it

Do you share those passions with other people? Have you collaborated and helped other people through the use of those talents you mentioned? Remember to bring out the fact that you work well with all sorts of people, that you help them discover themselves and new cultures. If you’ve used those talents to depict things going on with society, that you would like to bring awareness towards, use that too.

Why Photography Matters as Art as Never Before (Hardcover)

Why Photography Matters as Art as Never Before (Hardcover)

$65.36

From the late 1970s onward, serious art photography began to be made at large scale and for the wall. Michael Fried argues that this immediately compelled photographers to grapple with issues centering on the relationship between the photograph and the viewer standing before it that until then had been the province only of painting. Fried further demonstrates that certain philosophically deep problems—associated with notions of  theatricality, literalness, and objecthood, and touching on the role of original intention in artistic production, first discussed in his controversial essay “Art and Objecthood” (1967)—have come to the fore once again in recent photography. This means that the photographic “ghetto” no longer exists; instead photography is at the cutting edge of contemporary art as never before. Among the photographers and video-makers whose work receives serious attention in this powerfully argued book are Jeff Wall, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky, Luc Delahaye, Rineke Dijkstra, Patrick Faigenbaum, Roland Fischer, Thomas Demand, Candida Höfer, Beat Streuli, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno, James Welling, and Bernd and Hilla Becher. Future discussions of the new art photography will have no choice but to take a stand for or against Fried’s conclusions.

The Art of the Personal Essay (Paperback)

The Art of the Personal Essay (Paperback)

$29.38

For more than four hundred years, the personal essay has been one of the richest and most vibrant of all literary forms. Distinguished from the detached formal essay by its friendly, conversational tone, its loose structure, and its drive toward candor and self-disclosure, the personal essay seizes on the minutiae of daily life-vanities, fashions, foibles, oddballs, seasonal rituals, love and disappointment, the pleasures of solitude, reading, taking a walk — to offer insight into the human condition and the great social and political issues of the day. The Art of the Personal Essay is the first anthology to celebrate this fertile genre. By presenting more than seventy-five personal essays, including influential forerunners from ancient Greece, Rome, and the Far East, masterpieces from the dawn of the personal essay in the sixteenth century, and a wealth of the finest personal essays from the last four centuries, editor Phillip Lopate, himself an acclaimed essayist, displays the tradition of the personal essay in all its historical grandeur, depth, and diversity.

One of the most innovative and influential artists of our time, Richard Prince can be variously described as a painter, photographer, sculptor and collector. His work makes use of an eclectic range of approaches to explore his fascination with Americana, pop culture, art, literature and language. This volume, published to accompany his 2008 exhibition at London’s Serpentine Gallery, is envisioned as a continuation of Prince’s major 2007 retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York–albeit in a smaller and more personal setting. Prince leads the book off with an essay that was first published in “Art in America” in 1988. Entitled “Bringing It All Back Home,” this text serves as the introduction for what is essentially an autonomous artist’s book filled with photographs of his works and installations. An end section on different paper features additional texts and a list of exhibitions.

The defining book on the master photographer, Ansel Adams At 100 is one of the most beautiful books ever created. Its author, John Szarkowski has painstakingly selected what he considers Adams’ greatest work — 114 images — and has tracked down the single best photographic print of each. He presents an unexpected and sometimes unfamiliar body of work. His brilliant and incisive essay speaks to his judgment of the importance of Ansel Adams as a modern artist. Published in August 2001, “Ansel Adams At 100″ is a superlative piece of bookmaking. Under the direction of Richard Benson, Dean of the Yale School of Art and a renowned reproduction expert, the exhibition prints have been scanned in tritone, faithfully reproducing the nuances of the original prints; the book was impeccably printed at Meridian Printing on specially-made French paper and bound in linen cloth, with a matching slipcase. This magnificent centennial volume truly defines the term “collector’s edition.”

 Architecture of Truth

Architecture of Truth

Le Thoronet Abbey, one of the wonders of twelfth-century Cistercian architecture and still revered by architects today, nestles in a wooded valley in Provence, south of France. This book is a pictorial appreciation of the abbey, photographed by Lucien Herve in the mid-1950s and introduced by Le Corbusier. ‘The pictures in this book are witnesses to the truth’, is how he describes Herve’s photographs of the Romanesque abbey. Herve’s exquisite study presents the building throughout the course of a day, depicting the changing play of light and shadow on its stone vaulted exterior and interior. Highly textured and almost abstract in quality, his photographs reveal how the abbey is defined as much by light as by the conventions of Romanesque architecture, as well as conveying the intense spirituality of the Cistercian monastic order. Arranged according to the canonical hours of prayer, Herve’s photographs are complemented by quotations from the psalms and the saints. An essay by Father Samuel of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sept-Fons provides an insight into the Cistercian monastic order, while architect John Pawson contributes a personal appreciation of this fine example of Cistercian architecture.
