The Festival of the Cinema, a not to miss event of the Venetian summer

One of the absolutely not-to-miss events of Venice is certainly the Festival of the Cinema. Already arrived at its 66th edition, it has not lost even a bit of its charm and its red carpet every year sees parade the best international and national actors.

This year the Festival will be held from 2 to 9 of August, and now there are already the first confirms and rumors on what we will see in that wonderful frame. For those who want to spend a week end in Venice, this could be a great moment to admire one of the events with most resonance at world level. The guidelines of this edition are already defined. It was known for some time that also this year, the director of the Festival will be Marco Muller, whose previous managements had satisfied almost totally public and crisis. The 66th Festival also reconfirms the traditional sections in which it is structured. The only novelty here is the re-proposition of the competitive section “Controcampo”: its aim is to provide a broader overview on the film industry of participating countries. The other sections are “Venezia66”, “Orizzonti” and “Corto Cortissimo”.

As president of the jury of movies in competition has been designated Ang Lee, well known in the Festival frame for his Gold Lions (Brokeback Mountain in 2005 and Lust, caution in 2007). Choice guessed since the recognized ability of the director to make dialogue the west and east cinematography. The Golden Career Lion will be delivered to the director and producer John Lasseter and to Disney Pixar directors, joined in the spread and enhancement of contemporary animated films, now recognized as one of the expressive force of the new millennium. To admire the celebrities the advice is to start looking right now for a housing in Venice, since this event always attract a lot of tourists.

Another big event connected to the Festival is the re-See, 50 years after the Golden Lion, of “The Great War” (1959) a masterpiece by Mario Monicelli, starring Alberto Sordi and Vittorio Gassman, as reconstructed in the long version by the National Film Library, under the supervision of the director of photography Giuseppe Rotunno. The masterpiece will be screened in Campo San Polo in the day of pre-opening of the Festival International Film Festival, September 1 2009.

To inaugurate the exhibition there will be Baarìa by Giuseppe Tornatore, this is the first Italian film after 20 years to inaugurate the exhibition in Venice, and represents the most demanding production of the Italian film industry for many years.

These few advances will already make mouth water to all movie lovers, the Venice Film Festival is always a big party, and a truly not to miss event for lovers of good cinema. At that time there are also a lot of hotels in Venice, which will make your stay even more enjoyable.

For one or two semester courses in the History of Photography.   Mary Warner Marien has constructed a richer and more kaleidoscopic account of the history of photography than has previously been available. Her comprehensive survey shows compellingly how photography has sharpened, if not altered forever, our perception of the world.   The book was written to introduce students to photography. It does not require that students possess any technical know-how and can be taught without referring to techniques in photography. Incorporating the latest research and international uses of photography, the text surveys the history of photography in such a way that students can gauge the medium's long-term multifold developments and see the historical and intellectual contexts in which photographers lived and worked. It also provides a unique focus on contemporary photo-based work and electronic media.
