Home Studio Equipment Photography

What can I photograph to start?
I work as a newspaper photographer right now, and I’m lookin’ to start a photography business eventually (on the side for now), and I’ve jus’ gotten an opportunity to shoot my first wedding in a couple weeks. I don’t have the funds to rent out a studio to start doin’ portraits, plus I need a bigger portfolio… I know I could shoot weddings, parties, in-home portraits, etc.
Does anybody have any ideas on other events/situations I could photograph that wouldn’t require a studio or much equipment (backdrops, props, lighting, etc.)?? Thanks guys!
Having been both a journalistic photographer and then portrait photographer I can identify with your dilemma. The key to moving into a new photographic field is the personal connections you can make along the way from the ones you have already established. Call everyone you know that has some connection with photography and potential clients. Let them do some of the footwork for you and help with introductions. Second, make sure you join PPA, PMA ASMP as well as the local service organizations such as Rotary or Kiwanis. You will get great opportunities from there. Next, volunteer your service (pro-bono) for charity events, sports tournaments, etc. and take the opportunity to connect with the heads of those organizations.
You don’t need a studio, but you will need some basic portable lighting equipment and background.
Success is more about your ability to promote than your skill as a photographer (which I assume is good). The ability to change your focus from camera to business is crucial to moving in the direction you want to go.

Marketing Fine Art Photography (Paperback) $49.44 In recent years as the field of photography has exploded, many photographers consider selling their work to make a profit and to help defray the high costs of equipment. But, many photographers don`t have the business and marketing knowledge required to successfully sell fine art photographs; and many of those who have tried have been met with disappointment. Until now, little information of value has been available. In Marketing Fine Art Photography, Alain Briot offers practical, up-to-date and field-tested marketing techniques from the viewpoint of a fine art landscape photographer who earns a living from the sale of his fine art prints. Briot teaches that by taking control of the selling process, you can increase your profits and, ultimately, direct your own destiny. Briot`s approach is based on offering quality not quantity; and offering something unique, rather than something that is mass-produced. Though directed toward selling fine art, this method can be applied to other products. After a series of trials and errors, Briot devised a marketing system that allowed him to get out of debt, pay for a state-of-the-art studio, and purchase his first home, all from the sale of his photography. Briot has taught fine art photography marketing to numerous students in seminars, through one-on-one consulting, and through his Marketing Mastery tutorial DVD. Topics include: Defining fine art photography Wholesale, retail, and consignment Knowing your customer Where to sell and how to price fine art Fundamentals of marketing and salesmanship Profitability and honesty in business Packing and shipping fine art Common marketing mistakes The unique selling proposition (USP) |
