Fashion Photography Issues
Cannon 500D or Nikon D3000 or Nikon D5000? which one to pick?

i am a brand new DSLR user this will be my first camera, i am very confused with which one to go for, i am a fashion student so will be using it for photo shoots as well as general photography,i have read so many reviews, i thought another opinion wouldn’t hurt, money isn’t a issue. the Nikon d3000 Guide menu sounds very tempting, but I’m sure i can just read a guide book right?!

Since this is your first fully adjustable camera of any kind, I would suggest you buy the least expensive DSLR and spend some of your “saved” money on a second or third lens.

In about four to five years, you will be replacing what ever camera you buy due to the higher technology that will be available by then, but your lenses will last for decades. Better to learn and have a few lenses to increase your reach when shooting various subjects, than to have a host of features that may take you years to understand and use routinely and be stuck with only one lens.

When it comes to choosing a certain camera system, you will have to determine which fits you and your style of shooting.

Go into a camera store and see which of the cameras fits your hands the best.

See which cameras menu is the easiest for you to use to make changes in ISO, camera resolution, white balance, mode switching and make EV changes (a camera with +5/-5 EV could be important to you).

Finally, take a SD card with you and test each camera at their highest and lowest ISO as well as when using the white balance that matches the light in the store as well as with it in the “auto white balance” mode.

Once you get home and are able to see the results on your large computer monitor, you will know which camera is better for your needs and expectations, not ours.

Take your time before you decide. Once you choose one, you will be married to that system for decades and the cost of changing to the other system will cost you nearly as much as a divorce

Comprehending Gender Issues Through Photography

Comprehending Gender Issues Through Photography

$96.59

With regards to gender, the constitution of South Africa holds one of the most advanced positions in the world. Yet social realities seem far removed from written ideals. This book examines the role of cultural production in bridging the gap. In 2005, the author Irina Turner examined the photography exhibition Is Everybody Comfortable? at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, South Africa. The exhibition was produced by the Market Photography Workshop in Johannesburg. The author analyses to which extent contemporary South African photography can influence societys perception of a postmodern gender concept. The study outlines the emergence of this gender notion in South Africa embedding it in the context of arts and culture. Based on that edifice, a discursive analysis of the exhibition in Cape Town supported by interviews with visitors, photographers, and critics investigates to which extent gender theory can be applied to social reality. This book is written for professionals in the cultural sector, for gender activists, for development practitioners, and for everybody concerned with the implementation of theory into practice. Baudrillard Reframed

Baudrillard Reframed

$25

Jean Baudrillard has been a unique intellectual voice in many of the key debates and issues facing an increasingly globalized, media-driven world. “Baudrillard Reframed” offers the arts student, and others working with Baudrillard’s ideas, an accessible overview of his better known arguments, as well as extending beyond them to critically engage with his radical notions of illusion, singularity, and the fatal. Kim Toffoletti surveys the ideas of this influential — often provocative — French thinker as they relate to today’s image-saturated environment. She demonstrates their relevance to analyzing contemporary visual phenomena such as advertising, photography, reality TV, fashion, art, pornography, and virtual reality. Baudrillard’s key themes and arguments are illustrated through a range of visual works, from the graffiti art of Banksy and Katherine Hamnettis protest t-shirts, to Sophie Calleis photography.

 Chicks with Guns

Chicks with Guns

$28

In Chicks with Guns, Lindsay McCrum has created a cultural portrait of women gun owners in America through photographs that are both beautiful and in a sense unexpected. The book examines issues of self-image and gender through the visual conventions of portraiture and fashion, but the guns are presented here not as superimposed props but as the very personal lifestyle accessories of the subjects portrayed. And it defies stereotypes often associated with aspects of the popular culture of both guns and women. Like the 15-20 million women gun owners in this country, the women we meet in Chicks with Guns ( their portraits are accompanied by their own words), reside in all regions of the country, come from all levels of society, and participate seriously in diverse shooting activities. The women here are sportswomen, hunters, and competition shooters. Some use guns on their jobs and some for self-defense. They may not all be classically beautiful, but in these photographs they all look beautiful, exuding honesty, confidence, poise, power and pride. They are real women with real guns that play a part in their lives. By focusing her camera respectfully on this particular aspect of the American scene, gun-wielding women and girls, Lindsay McCrum sheds new light on who we are in America today.
