Creative Wedding Photography

Armed with both the wedding date, as well as the locale of the wedding, you look for a photographer to record your memorable day. Hiring the right photographer is of course all-important. The following tips should help you to make your choice.

Choose the style you desire, and inquire from the photographer if they can do that style. Or, you may look at samples of the photographer’s photos and see if the style is what you are seeking. Styles vary, but most photographers will fit into one of the following categories:

Traditional – these are very formal pictures and will include the bride and groom of course, but also the immediate families of both, and the participants such as best man and others, as well as the ladies that were involved representing the bride.

Photojournalistic – this style shows the “history” of your wedding and in fact will tell the photographic “story” of your wedding. The majority of these types of shots is a natural progression and often contains no posed shots at all.

Editorial – this style usually encompasses both the traditional and the photojournalistic style and therefore may include some shots that are very creative as well.

Again, be sure and look at the photographer’s samples. With most you will find that their portfolio is on the computer and thus looking over the pictures with both bride and groom in attendance will be possible.

The people you are going to deal with, such as your caterer, your priest or rabbi, the store where you are going to purchase your wedding dress, or the store where the groom and groomsmen are going to get their tux will all be glad to give you recommendations for a good photographer that their own clients were thrilled with. Of course, your own friends, co-workers and relatives, may also be able to make recommendations.

Do not be afraid to personally interview a photographer. An affable photographer is important, but so too are the answers to your questions. For example, what did the photographer try to capture with such and such a couple? Did the photographer feel that they captured the essence of their personalities? Did the groom and bride or the photographer create the shots that represented the most creative shots?

Be sure and nail down whether the photographer will be using film or be strictly digital? Ask about printing the pictures, if digital, for use in albums and of course the cost of a computer set too.  You may also like some wedding pictures that feature special effects. If so, ask if the photographer can create special effects.

Try to find a photographer whose personality more closely matches both the groom and bride. Couples who are into practical jokes, for instance, will not get along with a staid and formal older gentleman, and vice versa.

One of your most important questions may entail whether or not the photographer will be bringing extra equipment should the equipment fail. Shun a photographer who does not answer this important question in the affirmative. After all, this is the only chance you’ll get for photographs of this important day!
