Does the image engine algorithms greatly affect the Signal to noise ratio on a sensor?
Im kind of annoyed seeing digital cameras for sale, that advertise only the megapixels and thats about it, even on the DSLR ranges. So I start looking into image sensor formats, only to discover that certain engines apparently enhance picture quality at smaller sensor sizes. Is this the case, and if so what would be your recommendation of sensor/engine type?
Well technologically CMOS sensors produce marginally less noise because they do not need a charge going through it to detect light. However it’s not a huge gap in performance between CCD and CMOS, so basically buy a CMOS if you absolutely need that little bit of difference.
Pixel density will plays less of a role than you would think, lets compare a Canon 450D to a Canon 5D classic, both have 12mp sensors, but the 5D is full frame. Here it will make a difference, each pixel has twice the area on a full framer. But if you were to compare a 1D mkIII (10mp) and a 1D mkIV (16mp) while the pixel density has increased, supposedly (according to Canon) the pixel size has not changed because of microlens technology on the sensor.
All in all it seems that Nikon and Canon have this corner of the market cornered, look at the D3s and the 1D mkIV and you look at the efforts they’ve gone to in order to deliver such performance. Both are now capable of ISO102400, which suggests that the performance at 3200 or 6400 is going to be miles better than anything that came before.
To further Canon’s confidence in their control of noise, their ever increasing resolution, the 7D is at 18mp on an APS-C sized sensor! It can handle ISO12800 (just). And their D!GiC IV processor is definitely regarded as the finest on the market right now.
The final word in this matter, ISO is still meant for a photographer to push up shutter speeds in good light. When you’re in a low light situation pushing the ISO will always generate lots of noise nomatterwhat you do, things can reduce it but it’s not gonna get rid of it.
A note to add: Fujifilm has turned this development sidways with the EXR sensor, using sensor binning to discard high noise pixels, and then recombining a sensor to get a sensible lower noise image. Canon has subsequently followed with the sensor found in the G11 and S90. This i where I see technology going, imagine a Nikon D3x or Canon 1Ds III with that technology.
