compare and contrast 35mm manual cameras with digital still cameras?

Agreed with everything Larry said, but perhaps the word “manual” in your question is what you’re asking? By the way, it always helps if you will take the little extra effort to clearly state your question rather than just a vague title blurb.

But to answer to another aspect of the subject, an older 35mm MANUAL camera has the HUGE advantage that it will actually force you to learn about photography, i.e. how to determine exposure, focus, composition, and to THINK to strive to make every photo count because you have film and processing costs every time you push the shutter.

Digital, on the other hand, is regarded as more of a electronic device, and the general public mistakingly think it can just be put on Auto, and poof… like magic, you will have perfect photos. No one wants to bother to learn photography basics, and the horrible photos, and the questions on this forum prove it. A digital camera responds to someone who knows what they are doing just like a film camera, but to my great dismay, digital is relagating photography to an electronic toy.

Now, medium format film with properly scanned negatives is in another league, and is still superior over digital, with the possible exception of the thirty thousand dollar 39 megapixel digital backs.
