If the images are for web work, it’s a moot point. The film image has to be rendered digitally and here I believe the digital camera may have the edge and give a better image, it’s already shot in digital. With film it is a extra step and because of that the image could be lessened enuf to make a slight difference, but I doubt it.
As said, it’s really getting harder and harder to tell these days. I shoot with a Fuji S-5 D-SLR and print with a Epson 7600 wide format 8 color printer. Some work can come off the printer that when matted, framed and hung, people were amazed to know it was digital, even on 16×20′s.
What many people don’t understand now a days is that when they have their negs printed, many are scanned and run thru a digital printer, a Fuji Frontier is used a lot here, so saying which process is now better is again, a moot point. Many 1 hour machines are digital. The film scanned and printed on photo paper with LED’s and run thru chemicals. Some machines are actual high speed ink jets and can scan the neg and print darn near as fast as the old way.
However, you toss 6×6 film or anything larger into this equation and film will win hands down only because a person could buy a whole Hasselblad outfit and accessories for under the cost of the nearest digital back that could out shoot film in this size. 35mm film has almost met it’s match now and as said, one can’t tell much of a difference anymore and more and more magazines, wedding, sport, nature, model and other photographers ARE shooting digital..
The horse is not dead and gone but do you see many people riding them to the next city..? The painters of land scape’s and people of the mid 1800 hundreds said photography will never replace painting. It had been around for century’s. Again, painting is not dead, but it is no longer the way to capture images and show them off to the masses.
I have no regrets in shelving my 7 Nikon bodies when I went digital. I kept the lenses, they work on my Fuji’s and well…!
