Digital Camera Vs Slr Camera
Digital Camera Vs Digital SLR Camera — Which is Best?

Which camera do you think is good in terms of picture quality? In either cases, can you please suggest a good model that is in market right now. I also want to enhance lens sometime down the lane..

Thanks.

It depends on what you want to do and how important pictures are to you.

If you’re simply interested in documenting the odd trip you take and taking snaps of the family and parties there are a lot of excellent point and shoot cameras on the market. They’re inexpensive, they don’t stress you too much in terms of having to learn photographic theory, they take excellent pictures under most conditions and they fit in your pocket. All they demand of you is to keep their batteries charged and that you press the shutter button after you’ve composed your picture.

The down side of these is that you have no control over the picture so you can’t get creative and the moment you’re beyond the range of the camera you’re sunk, it won’t take a good picture. The other down side is that the camera makes all the decisions in terms of exposure, contrast, colour, hue, saturation and so forth.

Going a step higher, there are also quite a few point and shoot cameras on the market that allow you to fiddle with settings. These are almost like DSLRs in that you have control over the elements of a good picture albeit only to a limited extent. They’re great if you want to get a bit creative and learn what photography is really all about. Some of these can get expensive but there are also cheaper ones available. They’re a nice compromise if you don’t want a DSLR but still want some control over your picture.

The down side of these is less than with the regular point and shoot cameras but only marginally less. You do have some control over how the camera processes the images but only marginal control.

Finally, if you have a real passion for photography and a need to do a lot of pictures, controlling all aspects of the picture, the DSLR is what you want. The camera has a bewildering array of accessories like lenses, flash, macro stuff and so forth that can solve just about any photographic problem you may encounter.

The camera bodies start very simple for the amateur (they’re often just like point and shoot cameras) and as you go up the model line become increasingly more sophisticated to the point where many people need to take an extensive course before they are able to understand and use all the features.

The nice thing about DSLRs too is that the gadgets you buy for them are upwards compatible, so if you buy some lenses, you’ll be able to use them on the higher end bodies later too if you decide to upgrade.

The down side for the DSLR is that they can be expensive, they are certainly a lot heavier, and as you go up the model line they are more complex. The other down side is that they don’t fit in your pocket.

I use a Nikon D200 SLR and keep it in a thirty pound knapsack that contains additional lenses and other things that I need with the camera for the kinds of things I do. I sometimes also use a Nikon D70s DSLR that I keep in a separate camera bag that is also lighter, about fifteen pounds. As a result I also own a small point and shoot, of the middle category, one that allows me some control too and fits in my pocket. This way I always have a camera with me wherever I go and I have a powerhouse when I’m out doing serious stuff.

To decide what you want you’ll have to decide whether taking pictures is important to you and whether you want to learn photography. If it’s not that important, go with a simple point and shoot and you’ll likely be happy. If you want to learn a little about photography get yourself a point and shoot that gives you some control. And if you have a real passion for photography, start with an entry level DSLR like perhaps the Nikon D40x. Better yet, if you can afford it, I’d look at the Nikon D80 and you’re best choice. It has a lot of professional features that will give you amazing control over every image.

I hope this helps a little.
