Speaking of SLR’s, what is the outcome of increasing the camera’s ISO – if the film speed is different?

I own a Digital SLR. In low light situations, all I need to do is adjust the f/number and shutter speed. And then, if that hasn’t allowed enough light in, I increase the ISO.
But I have an upcoming situation where I’ll need to use my old Nikon SLR, and I never considered increasing the camera’s ISO (ASA) to 800 – for example – even though I’m only using film rated at ISO 200 – until I got my DSLR.
The lens is a 105mm f/2.5 and I’m not sure it will allow sufficient light in for where I’ll be photographing. And I’m not willing to increase the film speed above 200 if I don’t have to.

With a digital camera, the ISO adjustment increases the sensitivity of the sensor, so you can get pictures in lower light. But on a film camera, the ISO setting is just to inform the meter of what film you’re using. If you set the camera ISO to something other than the actual film speed, your exposure will be wrong. If you have ISO 200 film and set the camera to ISO 800, your pictures will be 2 stops underexposed. Many films can be “push processed” to enable you to shoot at a higher film speed, but image quality will suffer, and you have to have it developed at a custom lab. You’re better off using high-speed film if you need the extra sensitivity.
