Is still negative film better than any type of electronic sensor?
Many photographers agrees that the image quality of a picture captured on a high quality negative film is better than a picture captured with most digital camera sensors, even digital SLRs (mainly because negative film has a better exposure latitude than regular CCD or CMOS sensors, therefore a wider dynamic range). Does anybody know any exception?
Oh, such a complex question! In comparing digital with emulsion (film) photography you *must* consider all of the variables:
Film is rated by the ASA/ISO system. The higher the ISO rating, the faster the film (less light needed to expose it properlly). The higher the ISO, the more noise in the final print. The ISO ratings given to the digital camera sensors are an attempt to draw a correlation between the system people are used to and the new digital systems. Here, the larger the individual pixel element on the sensor, the more sensitive (higher ISO, less light needed to expose properly. Also, you can increase the sensitivity (ISO) of the digital sensor by applying more electrical energy to it. This is how digital cameras adjust their ISO ratings, by applying more electrical current or bias to the sensor. Just like film, a higher ISO (more power applied to the sensor) will cause much more noise in the final picture.
Comparing 35mm film cameras:
A film camera loaded with 25 iso color film will *always* give a better picture than any Consumer digital camera, even at 8MP.
A film camera loaded with 400 iso color film will give about the same quality picture as an upper-level Consumer digital camera.
A Prosumer or Pro digital camera, at or above 6MP, shooting in RAW format will almost always outdo any 35mm film camera with any kind of film.

Comparing meduim format camreas (6X4.5, 6X6, 6X7):
A medium format camera loaded with 25-400 iso film will out perform any Consumer, Prosumer digital camera.
A Professional-level, medium format, digital camera shooting a 20MP file will give about the same quality as a medium format film camera.
Comparing large format cameras (5X7, 8X10):
No digital camera can come close to replacing the overall quality of a large format print.
