What are good books for beginners at photography?

I have a digital SLR camera that I got as a gift. I’ve played around with it and happened across some decent shots. But I really don’t know what I’m doing. I’m tired of using it as point and shoot when I know it’s capable of so much more. What are good beginner’s books to get me started?

However, I learned everything I needed to know with resources I found easily online. When I went out to buy books that could further my knowledge I found that there was very, very little to be learned from books because free online learning was just as good if not better.
All the information in a published book matched up with what I found on the internet. The only difference is that I wasn’t paying $30-40 per book that doesn’t do as good a job of explaining things. You just have to search specifically for sub-subjects in photography that you would like to know.

No book will offer you as much in the way of ideas and personal opinion like you would find online. It helps to actually talk to people online in knowledgeable groups like flickr.
