Are there any “standards” when it comes aperture and shutter speed?

I know most one-time use and cheap film cameras are usually set at a standard of f/8. My guess is because for brighter, and daylight situations it lets in the right amount of light. Now, what floors me is if for certain common situations, is there any “se standard” (since nothing in photography besides a camera and film is really set in stone) for the more technical things such as aperture and shutter speed. I understand most of it is experimentation, but having a guide or starting point would be quite useful.

The Sunny f/16 rule is the basic standard for cameras that you can control the aperture and shutter.

Another “standard” rule is to set your shutter speed at 1/’focal length of your lens’ if you are hand holding the camera. For example, if you were shooting a camera that has a 50mm lens then you would set the shutter to a minimum of 1/60 second to avoid camera shake.

Brownie cameras were often set at 1/30 or 1/50 with a fixed aperture of f/11. Other than that I know of no real “standard” shutter speed.
