ok, so i was googling photography contests and i found one from wired magazine. it sounds really familiar but familiar dosnt neccessarily make it legit….. heres the link:

http://www.wired.com/rawfile/2010/01/wired-magazine-spine-photo-contest/

I suggest you read this part of their “rules” and make your own mind up.

Effectively entry into the competition gives them the “right” to use your work (whether you win or not) in any form they like for no payment or attribution.
You are giving them a license to use your work for ever for anything.

My advise – STAY WELL AWAY from any competition which has this clause.

7. OWNERSHIP AND LICENSE. All entry materials become the property of the Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned. The copyright in any Submission shall remain the property of the entrant, but entry into this Promotion constitutes entrant’s irrevocable and perpetual permission and consent, without further compensation or attribution, to use such Submission for editorial, advertising and publicity purposes by the Sponsor and/or others authorized by the Sponsor, in any and all media now in existence or hereinafter created, throughout the world, for the duration of the copyright in the Submission. Sponsor and/or others authorized by the Sponsor shall have the right to edit, adapt, and modify the Submission.

Every thousand years a contest is held in the universe. This time, Earth has the home field advantage as mild-mannered scientist Stephen Swain is chosen, unbeknownst to himself, as the planet`s champion and pitted against the champions of seven other worlds in a battle to the death in the New York Public Library.
